Sunday Thoughts: Choose Life

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. ~ Deuteronomy 30:19-20

I've really been focusing on these verses this week and as it's Sunday it seemed to be a logical day to share them.

Long before the phrase 'Choose Life' was made famous in Trainspotting, and before it was emblazoned across George Michael's chest in the Wake Me Up (Before you go go) video, it was written in the Bible. I wonder if God knew way back then that it would be such an iconic phrase (answer: of course he did)!

Here in Deuteronomy, God is talking to Moses in relation to the nation of Israel. Moses was the leader of Israel and God gave him the 10 commandments and all the other laws that the Israelites were called to live by.

"I've set before you life and death, blessings and curses"

We've been given a choice. We can choose good or evil, life or death, positivity or negativity.

How often do we choose to speak negatively over our lives and our circumstances? How often do we choose to moan and whine rather than be optimistic and positive about things? How often do we choose to nag rather than encourage?

Let's learn to speak life over our lives and into the lives of others. This week:

Choose to see the silver lining in negative circumstances.
Choose to encourage rather than nag.
Choose to trust the process rather than stress about it.
Choose to compliment rather than criticise.
Choose to love rather than hate.
Choose to have faith rather than fear.
Choose to believe rather than doubt.

Choose life!
